Acoustic Surveys of the Abbey

14th and 21st January 2023 – Acoustic Surveys of the Abbey

Dr Gianluca Foschi from Newcastle University’s Centre for Landscape is working with us to survey the interior of the Abbey using point cloud lasers, and map acoustic data onto the survey. If we uncover the suspected resonance chambers during the archaeology excavations, we’ll invite Gianluca back to map those too. This data will allow us to manipulate the model for different purposes – we can work out where best to put a stage for concerts, a screen and speakers for film nights, and a microphone for sermons.

In his earlier research, Gianluca examined the how early Christian buildings were intentionally designed to use proportions derived from ancient musical theory, specifically how this was used for the acoustics of early churches. We wonder how Blanchland Abbey might fit with his research!
