The Treasures of Blanchland: a community of accidental archaeologists

Public talk Wednesday 22nd October 6-7pm at The Lit & Phil, Newcastle, NE1 1SE

Blanchland rises from C12 Abbey foundations, nestled within glorious countryside, its tenacious community telling centuries of stories. The Grade1 Abbey church is core for both residents and visitors: seeking authenticity, solace, beauty, and connection here.

Yvonne Conchie, a Chartered Geographer and alumni of Newcastle University, has been supporting the community since 2019 to deliver a series of National Lottery Heritage Fund projects. As accidental archaeologists, their studies of the material culture have engaged with professional archaeologists, architects and heritage crafts people, opening up a wealth of discoveries about the Treasures of Blanchland.

Join Yvonne to learn more about the community’s plans for safeguarding these Treasures through repairs, research and warm accessibility, reorientating the Abbey to share memorable experiences of this deep history. Their ambition is to create a legacy of thoughtful visitors and a heartened community, both sustaining this venerable place.
