Societies and Groups

In days gone by, small rural communities were closer-knit than they are now, and this was perhaps particularly true of remote Hunstanworth, where travel to other areas, winter shortages and other hardships were a way of life.

Societies and associations were ways in which people could gather to exchange information, get practical help when in difficulty, enjoy each other’s company – and perhaps escape from the family for a while!

Here we look at the kinds of organisations that were once active in Hunstanworth, giving an insight into how people spent their spare time and how such groups formed lifelong bonds of friendship.
