Two phase, circa £1.5M and 5 year project using citizen research, academic study, and skilled heritage conservation to unlock the mysteries of the Treasures of Blanchland and repair the fabric of the medieval Blanchland Abbey. We’ll share what we discover through a programme of public events to support a sustainable future for Blanchland: its church, village and its environs.
The third phase of the Blanchland Abbey Project will run from late 2025, if funding is secured.

During the 6As of Blanchland project, we have discovered that there are many treasures within the Abbey which we will conserve, study and safely re-display once the remodeling and repair works are complete. The treasures are finely worked and unique examples of heritage crafts including:
- 15th Century stained glass panels of the kneeling monks
- 16th Century goldwork embroidery of Christ on the cross
- 16th Century Tudor wood carving
- 17th Century Stewart ironwork
- Silver and brass ware
- Historic Bibles and prayer Books
We will also repair the fabric of the building, treating woodworm and rot, fixing the gutters, and making the walls and windows watertight so it can dry out. We also hope to install net zero carbon heating, an accessible toilet and a water supply, and replace the steps so that Blanchland Abbey can offer a warm welcome to everyone for decades into the future.
